Face lift surgery may be an ideal option if you are particularly concerned with signs of aging in your face. These signs of aging can include sagging of the middle area of the face, deep creases or wrinkles below the eyes,
deep creases around the mouth, loss of muscle tone in the lower face and loose skin. Officially known as rhytidectomy, a face lift is a cosmetic surgical procedure that can help diminish these signs of aging in the face and neck.
While nothing can completely stop the aging process, a cosmetic face lift can help reverse many of the signs of aging to create a more youthful appearance. The skin, muscle and bone of the face go through many adjustments as a person ages. Cells begin to divide slower, the dermis gets thinner, bones lose their thickness, muscle stretches and the skin begins to lose its overall elasticity. These changes make the skin and muscle susceptible to gravity, which causes sagging skin and wrinkles.
During the facelift, the surgeon generally makes an incision that starts at the temple hairline, goes in front of the ear in natural creases and ends at the bottom of the hairline. In addition, the surgeon may create a small incision under the patients chin in order to tighten the skin of the neck. After the initial incisions, the skin is separated from the underlying fat and muscle tissues. The surgeon may use liposuction to trim excess fat in the face to give the patient a slimmer look. The surgeon will then tighten the most important layer of tissue the layer under the skin called the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS). Tightening this layer will help lift the cheeks, define the jaw and help firm the neck.
The procedure is finished by pulling the skin back over the area and trimming any excess. The incision is then closed with sutures, stitches, or tissue glue. These are generally placed in the area of the hairline so that they can be hidden by the patient’s hair. This process can take between two to four hours, depending on the complexities of the procedure.
Facelifts can help bring out a person’s confidence and help them feel like the youthful and vibrant person they truly are. It is important to research your cosmetic surgeon to ensure that your doctor has the proper certifications and is experienced since this surgery is fairly complex. When considering a facelift it is important to think of all aspects of the procedure and recovery before making a final decision.
