Skin Cancer Reconstruction / Scar Revision

Removal of skin cancers often results in defects which can be quite disfiguring. Fortunately, advanced techniques are available to minimize and occasionally completely eliminate the presenting problem.  Reconstructive techniques include geometric skin flaps, grafts and other methods to restore anatomy.  Dr. Mazzara is well known locally for his expertise in reconstructing skin defects

Skin Grafting
Skin grafting is a reconstructive surgery procedure which involves the removing of skin from one area of the body and reapplying it to another.  It is often used to treat extensive wounds or burn scars.   Although many patients may request this procedure because it is commonly known, it is the least favorite method of reconstruction because of the potential mis-match of skin color and type as, for example, the skin of the thigh is thicker and more firm than that of the eyelid.

Flaps
Reconstructive procedures which involve flap closure are well planned geometric designs which allow for local tissue transfer from one adjacent site to another thereby maintaining similar skin quality, texture and tone.  These are the most desirable methods of management.  Associated types of flaps include bilobed flaps, rhomboid advancement and many, many others

Scar Revision
All scars are permanent.

Scars result from trauma, surgery, infection or acne.  Some scars look better than others.  For those scars that are objectionable, methods are available to thin, reduce, blend or alter the direction of a scar to make it more pleasing.  The resulting scar is still permanent- just more pleasing and better looking.  Filling agents like Restylane or Juvederm can help improve scars as well.

Dr. Mazzara has nearly 20 years of experience in managing skin cancer, scars and simple removal of skin growths.  He is the preferred cosmetic surgeon for a group of local dermatologists to help manage common patients and to provide his expertise to return patients to a more normal state of health and well-being.
